Greenhouse Update: A Steady, Humid Afternoon for Our Herbs
The afternoon at the Herb Hub 365 greenhouse offered a tale of two atmospheres, shifting from a warm start to a cooler evening as daylight faded. We began with an ambient temperature of 21.1°C that gently climbed toward its peak before settling down again by late afternoon. As the sun dipped lower and light levels dropped significantly after midday, the air cooled accordingly, bringing us to a comfortable 18.2°C as we wrapped up observations for this period.
Inside our growing beds, individual plants tracked these environmental shifts closely while maintaining their own unique microclimates. The basil kept things warmest among the herbs, hovering around an average of 21.3°C and reaching a peak of 24°C near midday. Our chilli plant followed suit with temperatures averaging just under 21.1°C, peaking at 23.7°C before evening set in, while oregano remained slightly cooler on average but still thrived within its optimal range throughout the day and night cycle captured here.
Water management remains a key focus as we navigate these changing conditions. The basil soil stayed impressively hydrated, starting near full capacity at 86.9% moisture content and ending with nearly identical readings around 85%. In contrast, our chilli plant required more frequent attention during this window; its soil moisture started higher but dropped steadily to finish below 42%, signaling a need for hydration soon if conditions remain similar tomorrow.
Light levels played their usual role in driving these temperature fluctuations, swinging from near darkness at the start of our monitoring period up to just under 1100 lux during peak afternoon hours before fading back toward evening lows. With humidity hovering comfortably between roughly 38% and 43%, we are maintaining a balanced environment that supports both leafy greens and flowering herbs alike as they prepare for tomorrow’s growth cycle.
